What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil premium is money allocated to schools to help support children who are entitled to free school meals. It is also allocated in respect of children who have been in the care of the Local Authority for at least six months as well as children of Services personnel.The criteria for a pupil attracting Pupil Premium is that a family's joint income is under £16,190 per year, and in receipt of any of the benefits listed:
Income Support
Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
The guarantee element of State Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of no more than £16,190
Working Tax Credit run-on
Universal Credit with an earnings threshold that does not exceed £7,400
Why has it been introduced?
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding reaches the pupils who need it most.
Who decides on how the money is spent?
In most cases the Pupil Premium is paid directly to schools, allocated to them for every pupil who receives free school meals. Schools decide how to use the funding, as they are best placed to assess what their pupils need.
How are schools accountable for the spending of Pupil Premium?
Schools are held accountable for the decisions they make through:
- The performance tables which show the performance of disadvantaged pupils compared with their peers.
- The new Ofsted inspection framework, under which inspectors focus on the attainment of pupil groups, in particular those who attract Pupil Premium.
- This report for parents that must be published online.
What can the school spend the money on?
The school can spend the money on a variety of measure to improve to attainment and progress of children, including additional staffing, new resources, support for specific groups, improving the school environment and its buildings as well as staff professional development.
